There is no escaping the fact that we live in grave, consequential and pivotal times. Humanity has the opportunity to soar into a lighted new era or continue with the warring, destructive, dead-end tendencies of the past. What is at stake is the freedom of the human spirit and liberation from the dominance of ancient and outworn modes of thinking and behaving that will lead to even more unimaginable catastrophes.
The Laws of Cosmos are inviolable and the Hierarchy of Being stands upon these exact laws. Such recorded historic texts as the Puranas, the Upanishads, and other ancient covenants transmit with absolute exactness the laws of Being. The Vyâsas of old and all succeeding Teachers of the Wisdom have sought to reveal these laws, emphasizing the need to honor them and live by their precepts, pointing out time and again that an understanding and application of such laws would ennoble the whole of humanity. However, by and large, humanity has chosen to ignore these higher precepts and disregard the greater Reality of which it is a part. In the words of the Agni Yoga Wisdom, “Man, who has been predestined by the Cosmos to be a builder and co-creator, has turned himself away from this crown.”2
Exercising its divinely given free will, instead of communion and interrelationship with the higher dimensions of consciousness; that is, one’s inner spiritual knowingness, humanity en masse has chosen to maintain an insular, self-contained and limiting existence, cut off from the higher possibilities.
In spite of the painfully obvious consequences and ramifications all around us, free will is the dignity of humanity. The Ageless, esoteric wisdom eternally points out that spiritual evolution cannot be forced and the Higher Spheres of consciousness can only be contacted by each individual flaming heart, who with goodwill, dedicated intention and aspiration strives for this realization in order to more effectively serve and benefit the Common Good.
In the Agni Yoga book, Hierarchy, the Masters of the Wisdom further explain the merit of free will and its relationship to the Aquarian quality of cooperation: “The Forces of Light do not stop the spirit from certain actions which violate often that which has been ordained. Often people are perplexed as to why the other paths are not indicated…. Let us reply, ‘The Forces of Light never invade human Karma.’ ”3
Although free will permits numerous perversions, contradictions and transgressions against the cosmic laws, it is pointed out that self-sacrifice, cooperation and loving understanding can neither be prompted nor commanded and transformation is only possible when the individual voluntarily and intentionally begins the ascent towards the Light of higher consciousness.
From a variety of multicultural sources such as The Tibetan Book of the Dead (The Great Book of Natural Liberation Through Understanding in the Between), The Egyptian Book of the Dead (The Book of Going Forth By Day) as well as the relatively more recent texts such as The Secret Doctrine by H.P. Blavatsky and The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall, the Ageless Wisdom put forth within the books of the Lucis Trust, authored by Alice A. Bailey, as well as those of the Living Ethics of the Agni Yoga Society, we learn about the profound and Ageless Wisdom that would lead erring humanity into the light of a new world.
In her Letter of 10 September 1934, Helena Roerich writes that “In the books of Living Ethics the opening, purifying and broadening of the consciousness” is considered a necessity for our current times.
And, within the book, Problems of Humanity, Alice A. Bailey writes that the major problem of our time is that people are not applying the higher wisdom:
Spiritual impression, whether conveyed by the Christ, by Krishna or by Buddha (and passed on to the masses by Their disciples) has not yet been expressed as it was hoped. Men do not live up to what they already know; they fail to make practical their information; they short circuit the light...It is the task of the disciples of the world to restore this flow and to stop this interference. This is the major problem facing spiritual people at this time.4
The need for humanity to conscientiously and with a one pointed focus apply itself to an imperative transformation of planetary consciousness is echoed in the words and work of the leading thinkers of our time, especially those found working on behalf of the whole of humanity within and around the United Nations.
