Initiation and the Antahkarana
Initiation is a process of developing inclusiveness.1
Initiation is daring to approach the Image of Light and not fearing to look at It. Uniting with Light requires courage and a high degree of self-denial; …The Teacher imparts many wise truths, but finally He will say, "Now walk alone, without fear."2

The motivating drive compelling the Initiate to pass from one initiation to the next is the fact that in this world cycle a fusion and expression in full waking awareness is required of three major states of consciousness: the Shamballa Consciousness, which is an awareness of the unity and purpose of Life; this implies Will, Direction and Oneness; the Hierarchical Consciousness, which is awareness of the Soul or the Self; this implies love, attraction and relation; and Human Consciousness, which is awareness of the soul within the form, implying intelligence, action and expression.

To build the antahkarana is to relate these three divine aspects and as the disciple does so, s/he undergoes expansions of consciousness (initiation). This process involves intense mental activity; it necessitates the power to imagine and to visualize, plus a dramatic attempt to build the Lighed Way in mental substance. The work of the building of the antahkarana is primarily an activity of the personality, aided by the soul; this in time evokes a reaction from the Spiritual Triad—the higher, more inclusive counterpart to the Soul.

In building the antahkarana, there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, we are working with energy and with energy which must be scientifically used and secondly, that we are dealing with a technique and process, dependent on the use of the creative imagination.

The building of the atahkarana can only be undertaken when the disciple is preparing for the second initiation. And, here it is important to recognize that there are thousands who today are preparing for this process. According to the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, his task has been to give out in book form, information about the next stage of intelligent and spiritual recognition for humanity. And, he names the understanding of building the Antahkarana—one of the three major sciences of the Aquarian Age—as being essential if humanity is to move forward as planned. In this moving forward, the disciples and aspirants of the world must realize their responsibility for they are the forerunners; they form the vanguard and prepare the way—if they can overcome that most major of all obstacles: inertia.

Initiation necessitates three activities—all of which demand the need to overcome inertia: penetration, polarisation and precipitation. What is required is a penetration into areas of the divine consciousness, which are not within the normal field of consciousness. This initiatory activity is achieved by the disciple through reflective meditation, the development of an interpretive spiritual understanding and the use of the trained discriminative mind. This will lead eventually to the stabilization of the disciple's consciousness in the new field of awareness, so that s/he becomes polarised there and can work intelligently from the attained point of awareness.

Once the disciple can do this and is aware of the new energies with which s/he may now work, s/he can then precipitate these energies into the three worlds of human service and thus employ them for the furthering of the hierarchical Plan. These three stages of conscious activity are recognized stages in every initiation with the exception of the first initiation. "The disciple (as the Scriptures put it) 'takes the Kingdom of Heaven by violence' and thus penetrates into the arena of activity of the Initiator; within that area of spiritual and dynamic influence he becomes polarised, with results, which are conditioned by the particular initiation being undergone. From this point he carries forward the task of precipitating the contacted energies and learns how to make them available in his work for humanity."3

The moment then that a disciple enters upon the Path of Initiation (from the second to the ninth initiation), s/he is to be found functioning at one of these three stages. The Initiate is thus taught to work with energies in accordance with the hierarchical Plan in order to bring about the precipitation of the planetary Purpose into the every-day life.

Initiation is a victory for the Soul, who has succeeded in mastering Its vehicle—the personal lower self. Many lives of struggle, service and progress are required; much hard work, constant effort and strenuous mental and spiritual living, but in the end the reward of revelation is adequate compensation for all that must be endured as the Initiate discards limitation and becomes liberated from all which has previously blinded, hindered and oppressed. As a result, with great understanding the Initiate can then cooperatively take part in the work of the Ages: transforming Planet Earth from a non-sacred to a sacred Planet.
