Growing the Light on Planet Earth
In the Age of Aquarius (cont)

It is time to say to the Light: 'I come as thy helper, and to the sun itself, I will stretch out my hand. And as long as the silver thread is intact, the stars themselves shall be my armor.'1

The esoteric wisdom tells us that an intensification of the light is going on all the time and that an increase in intensity began on the earth at about the time when humanity discovered the uses of electricity. From the material standpoint, our world is more lighted today than at any other point in history. And, achieving the light of knowledge is today a respected and publicly pursued sphere of human aspiration by the majority.

Yet, just as science recognizes that the visible spectrum of light is an infinitesimal part of the full spectrum of the electromagnetic spectrum, so the esoteric wisdom has long taught about the many gradations and forms of light. The Scriptures allude to this reality by proclaiming that in "Thy light shall we see Light." This very same theme is replicated within "The Affirmation of the Disciple" whose first line reads, "I am a point of light within a greater Light."

The esoteric explanation of this truth lies in the understanding that when the personality has reached a point of purification, dedication and illumination, then, the lesser light of the personality becomes aware of the greater light of the Soul. It was to this process that John the Baptist referred when he said of the Christ, "He shall increase but I must decrease."

Distinguishing between the light of the mind, the light of the Soul and the light of the Intuition, this esoteric wisdom refers to humanity's potential to eventually move from darkness to Light, from the unreal to the Real, from death to Immortality and from chaos to Beauty.

Meditation is often referred to as essentially the science of light. In meditation the practitioner develops the capacity to be impressed from the higher spheres of consciousness and through this process he/she becomes aware of the Soul light as it blends with the inherent light of the mind and through this blended light, comes awareness of a series of revelations.

In the words of the Old Commentary: "The light that shines within the heart of man discovers light and, in these blended lights, comes revelation. The light that shines within the sacred Hierarchy of Souls discovers these two lights revealed and they reveal a third—the revelation of the higher states of Being which hide and veil a Light which is not of planetary creation. These are four lights which reveal a Light Supreme, a Light which comes from distances beyond the ken of man. Yet all these lights have been revealed because a light has burned—immovable, secure—within the human heart."2

These revelations are also referred to as the five major initiations. The restlessness of material desire, seeking its satisfaction in the three worlds of the personal life eventually gives place to aspiration towards Soul contact and Soul life. This, in turn leads to an even greater reality and humanity slowly will comprehend the truth of the unity of all life. Each initiation immerses the initiate in a higher light; each initiation reveals new fields of responsibility and of opportunity and through his/her own effort, the disciple/initiate will see more light and walk in a greater light. The Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul refers to initiation as "a constant fusion of the lights."

In the Agni Yoga wisdom Light is considered to be the best bridge between the visible and the Invisible. It is avowed that Self-perfectment is to Light as self-indulgence is to darkness and it is recognized that the "realization of the Light in the heart will propel toward the Light, but darkness will dwell in darkness." [Fiery World, III (253)]

As we look around our world, we are aware of the distressing and appalling conditions everywhere on hand. Who would question that what is needed in every country is the appearance of "steadily shining points of light" who can illumine the way and dispel the darkness?

Writing about the field of Armageddon in the book, Heart, the Agni Yoga Society refers to "the City of Light" which is destined as the counterbalance to the field of Armageddon "proclaimed by the clanging of arms." (253) Just as in the personal life of the disciple wherein the moment of greatest development is usually the crisis point of greatest pain, so in the life of the planet. The opportunity for those who have the inner sight and an intuitive comprehension of the sign of the times could not be greater. May this auspicious season of Light inspire each of us to avail ourselves of the opportunity and do all that is possible to grow the light on planet Earth!
