Growing the Light on Planet Earth
In the Age of Aquarius

During the coming evolution people will realize where their treasure lies,
and will turn to this panacea of light.

The winter solstice is upon the Northern Hemisphere, promising once again the gradual return of the sun after a prolonged period of darkness. That there are holidays at the time of this astronomical event is no coincidence. Since ancient times, people have celebrated this yearly milestone, observing it with many different cultural, spiritual and religious traditions, celebrating the rebirth of sunlight after the darkest period of the year.

The ancient Roman feast of Saturnalia, honoring the God Saturn, for example, was a weeklong December feast that included the observance of the winter solstice. Romans also celebrated the lengthening of days following the solstice by paying homage to Mithra—an ancient Persian God of Light. Scholars don't agree about the exact origins of Christmas, although it is known that in the early years of the Christian church, the calendar centered around Easter or the passion cycle—the crucifixion and the resurrection. Historians tell us that as the early Christian leaders endeavored to attract new converts to their faith, they added Christian meaning to the existing festivals so that the focus on the rebirth of the sun became transferred to a celebration of the birth of the Christ—the birth of the Son of God. In the Ageless Wisdom this same truth is described somewhat differently, indicating that the Christ availed Himself of this cycle and came to the planet in the dark of the year in order to initiate a new era in which the whole of humanity would recognize light to be the distinguishing note.

In antiquity an appreciation of light was focused on the sun, which symbolized the source of Reality, the source of Light and Life. In ancient Egypt the Sun God, Re or Ra was worshiped as the "glorious King of the gods" and Plato used the image of the sun to represent the idea of the One, the Good and the Beautiful. The Gayatri, one of the oldest mantric prayers, referred to as the mother of the Vedas in the esoteric wisdom of the East, venerates the true Spiritual Sun, "hidden by a disc of golden Light," as the source of sustenance for our universe and as the custodian of all Truth.

Today, modern science tells us that all the information from the universe comes from light. Visible light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, having both electric and magnetic fields. Affirming the Gayatri's reference to the unseen power of the sun's light, science tells us that the light that we see—the visible light spectrum—occupies only one-thousandth of a percent of the whole electromagnetic spectrum. Light waves come in a variety of sizes, frequencies and energies. For example, the wavelengths of the light we can see range from 400 to 700 billionths of a meter, whereas gamma rays have wavelengths millions of times smaller than those of visible light.

Another interesting property of light, described by modern science is that light can be selectively absorbed, reflected or transmitted. For example, if a light wave of a given frequency strikes a material with electrons having the same vibrational frequencies, then those electrons will absorb the energy of the light wave and transform it into vibrational motion.

This scientific understanding of the properties of light gives us some elementary insight into the fundamental mysteries of light as described in the texts of the Ageless Wisdom.

In these texts, the Age of Aquarius into which we are moving is itself described as the age of light, of illumination and of revelation. It is said to be the Age when the second aspect of electricity—a great fusion of light and energy—will be understood. And, it is prophesied that the sun—the giver of light and life will be understood to have not only physical properties, but that it will be possible for increasing numbers of the dedicated and the committed to vibrate to the "Heart of the Sun"—the source of Christ or Soul-consciousness and some very few, will eventually be able to vibrate to the Central Spiritual Sun—the source of Monadic or Life consciousness. Much of what is now a mystery within the ancient and sacred Gayatri will be revealed so that what is now perceived as esoteric, will be brought into the light of day by those who fit themselves to know.
